September 2010

Expressing Your Authentic Self

This is a magical time of year - the Autumnal Equinnox, when the the days and nights are in balance, and the sun and moon are equal in strength. In the Celtic traditions, this day is marked with the festival of Herfest (Harvest). It is a dual festival of light and darkness, joy and sadness, recognizing that this is a time of abundance where the Earth brings a cornucopia of rewards, yet the elemental conditions will become less hospitable in the months to come.

We no longer live in a society where our livelihood is dependent on the weather. However, we can recognize and honor the cycles of the seasons. As we become more attune to the natural world, we can listen more closely to our own inner cycles.

Symbolically, the sun represents our light - our conscious mind, and our radiance outward into the world. It is yang - pure masculine energy. As our days grow shorter and nights are longer, the moon now has a stronger influence on us than the sun. The moon does not have a light of its own. It is reflective, contemplative, and introspective. It is yin and feminine in nature. The moon not only affects the tides of our oceans, but since our bodies are also 80% water, it affects our emotions as well. We all know that when the moon is strong, so are our emotions. This is where the term lunatic originated.

2010 has already been a highly charged emotional year, and the last quarter will be no exception. The celestial bodies are pulling you closer to your soul. Although our days will receive less light from the sun, our inner light will grow stronger, so we can know ourselves better.

The numerology of 2010 reveals how we can make the most of this energy, which can feel overwhelming at times. 2010 is a 3 Universal year (2+0+1+0=3). When we are influenced by the 3 vibration, we feel more emotionally sensitive. The challenge of this energy is to feel deeply, and instead of retreating into yourself, to express your feelings outward.

You might have found that throughout this year, you felt compelled to say things that you have previously held back. Or perhaps you initiated a creative pursuit that you had been previously putting off. That is the energy of the 3. The themes of this year that have been highlighted are cooperation, creativity, and communication. Notice, all three of these words begin with the letter C - the 3rd letter of the alphabet!

If you have been honoring your feelings this year, you will have been rewarded abundantly! Yet for many, this has been a confusing time. We live in a very yang, left brain, masculine oriented society. We are not taught to listen to our feelings. Even the more spiritually minded, psychically sensitive people are often afraid of any emotions that are perceived as negative such as anger, grief, and sadness for fear that this will attract more negativity.

This paradigm, when misunderstood can actually lead to more stress.  Certainly, it is good to notice where you are focusing your energy, and if you are dwelling in negativity it is best to choose to refocus your thoughts towards beneficial ones. However, your feelings will not go away because you want them to. They are often offering you intuitive messages about your path that can be helpful for you, even if they are unpleasant. It is akin to having your hand on a hot stove and trying to "think" your hand to feel comfortable. It does not make you a spiritually ungrateful person to acknowledge your emotion's powerful messages. In fact, by judging your feelings as "wrong" you are acting without love or compassion for yourself.

To be clear, I am not suggesting that you start mouthing off and saying the first thing that pops into your head! I am, however, suggesting that you refrain from judging your feelings. Instead, acknowledge them as your helpful guide. When you find yourself thinking that you are wrong for feeling something that doesn't seem "nice" or "good" or "spiritually correct", perhaps you can ask yourself, "What is this emotion trying to tell me?, If I didn't think I was a bad person for feeling this, what would I say or do differently?" You will find that by honoring and expressing your feelings, you can move through these emotions and find more clarity on the other side of them.

Ultimately, 3 is a number of joy! The highest vibration of this energy is using your words, through heartfelt connection, to uplift and inspire others. This also inspires us to acknowledge our joy! So many of us avoid our joy as much as we avoid pain. We can get so caught up in layers of our responsibilities and other people's expectations of us, that we avoid doing what we love. How many people do you know who have talents that they have not utilized in years because they need to pay the bills?

It is so important to express your inner gifts, and engage in activities that make you feel joyful every day. Please don't delay doing what makes you happy for another moment! Your joy is an intuitive indicator that you are on the right path, expressing your unique purpose. There is only one of you on this planet; only you can light up the world in your own special way. When you are celebrating yourself and your life by expressing your gifts, the Universe will support you in every way!

So just as the Earth experiences cycles of night and day, light and dark, by honoring the full range of your emotions, you will experience a connection to yourself and others that reflect your worth. It takes courage, but when you stay true to yourself, you will be bountifully rewarded with the abundant, fulfilling life that you deserve.

I wish you many blessings on your journey. May you joyfully share those blessings with others.
